The Asus Chromebook C202SA is a device that comes with a ruggedized design keeping the young children in mind. However, it can take up the rigors of school use even by the older kids and it is also a useful device for the adults to use it in harsh conditions. It is a good choice for its durable design, spill resistant keyboard and long battery life but a touchscreen would have been better.

Design and Build

The device is designed to take on the rigors of daily usage and even absorb shocks, drops, and vibrations.

The toughened rubber pads act as a bumper frame on all sides of the exterior.

The maker has used the unique nano-molding technology to reinforce the rubber guards to protect the critical components inside the chassis by reducing the impact of a fall from a height of nearly 4 feet or any accident.

The display, though small and with thick bezel, is designed to deliver vivid and sharper images, though a bit grainy.

It comes with HD or 1366 x 768 pixels resolution, matte finish, and an anti-glare panel that reduces reflections on it when you use the device outdoors and also makes the images softer to the eyes allowing to stare at the screen for long hours, closely, without feeling any strain.

The keyboard design is good and is of perfect size not only for the kids but even for adults with large fingers.

The spill resistant keyboard can resist as much as 66 cc of liquid spills. It has a good key travel of 2 mm and feedback to allow easy and accurate typing, but only in brightly lit settings because of the blue color letters printed on the buttons.

There seems to be no specific, practical and scientific sense in putting blue letters which is hard to see in low lights, in spite of being 15 % larger.

The keys are also significantly taller on this keyboard. It gives the feeling that you are typing on a traditional typewriter. It is certainly a very poor choice of design.

The design and careful selection of the components make this device weigh next to nothing. It is easy to carry around, thanks to the easy grip handles.

These two grips are placed strategically at the bottom to ensure better traction while holding the device and preventing it from slipping from the hand or when used on a sloping surface.

The strong hinge that attaches the screen to the base can open up to 180 degrees.

This allows keeping it flat on the surface for better viewing and easy sharing of the screen with others during a presentation, discussion or group study.

Another aspect of the design that makes this device stand apart from the crowd is that it is easy to repair and replace the parts.

The keyboard, battery, motherboard, and thermal module, all can be dismantled easily and quickly.

However, there is one flaw in the design. The viewing angle of the screen itself is not great and the rubber grip on the bottom does not let it lie completely flat on the surface.

This means that, unless you hover over the screen directly you will not be able to see the images clearly.

The system is equipped with Intel Celeron N3060 processor. It is powerful enough to provide a fast and consistent performance.

It comes with 2 MB cache and has a fair enough operating speed ranging between 1.6 GHz and 2.48 GHz, which is good enough by any standards.

However, the integrated graphics do not support intense computing tasks or gaming on this laptop.

Essentially used for learning, this graphics chip is good and powerful enough to run the necessary educational tools and software and deliver better images with vivid color reproduction, seamlessly.

The Google Chrome operating system is easy to use and is very useful for those who use Google Docs to write with.

The operating system seamlessly integrates with Google Docs as well as other vital apps into the small framework of this machine.

This operating system has the ability to update automatically and also comes with virus protection built in it.

It not only boots up in seconds but also stays fast and consistent all the time.

RAM & Storage

Though the 4 GB RAM of this unit is not upgradable, it is enough to ensure faster performance, and a bit of multitasking and browsing the web, courtesy its DDR3 feature.

The 32 GB eMMC storage is quite sufficient for kids going to school. It will allow storing a lot of projects for the school and submit or present them as and when required.

If bought now, you can even avail the benefits of Google One, whatever is left of it since it will expire on 31st January, 2021.

This is actually an exclusive offer from Google that allows you to use 100 GB of cloud storage, for free, when you register with your Google One account.

Ports & Connectivity

Though limited, the number of ports available in this model allow connecting enough devices and peripherals externally.

It includes two USB 3.0 ports, one HDMI port and one headphone-out and microphone-in combo jack.

In addition to that, there is also a standard 3-in-1 card reader that supports SD, SDHC, and SDXC.

The USB ports as well as the SD card slot also add to the convenient options to add to the local storage of the device as well.

You can surf the web conveniently and reliably with the wi-fi network of 802.11ac IEEE standard and use the Bluetooth 4.2 technology that this system supports.

Battery Life

The lithium polymer battery will allow you to work all day on this system in school or when you are out of your office.

It comes with a life of 10 hours, which is significantly more than most of the laptops of today.

Additional Features

The device includes all those Google apps that you are familiar with.

These apps will help you to download, edit, and convert your files from Microsoft Office in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.

There is also an HD webcam built in and located on the top bezel of the screen with mics. It takes good enough images during a video call.

There are two stereo speakers built at the front bottom corners of the laptop. It produces fair enough audio output with decent volume.

The sound is loud and clear but lacks in bass lines when you listen at high volume.

You will get an Asus warranty for a year but if there is any sign of physical damage on the device then the warranty is void.

You may also purchase an extended warranty at the time of purchase as well.

What Do Users Think about Asus Chromebook C202SA?

Though this laptop comes with a ruggedized design, it is more useful for the kids, than the adults, feels most of the users.

This is because it is certainly not a device that will support any advanced type of computing jobs due to its specs.

However, it is a good device for a Chromebook fan and kids will surely find it easy to use.

This is a more durable Chromebook which is small and lightweight to throw in a backpack or briefcase and carry it anywhere without bothering for a sleeve or a case.

However, the chassis could have been better, though it is not utterly awful, said a few users.

This is not the best laptop for professional adults or those who are used to nicer Windows laptops and Chromebooks.

Suitable for basic computing, the screen is grainy and dimmer, though it comes with HD resolution and anti-glare property.

The matrix pattern can be seen on it and the colors seem to be dull and more washed out, complained a few users.

Most of the users did not have to say anything against the performance of this machine. Check out Chromebook C202SA Manual.

They feel it is good enough for a laptop at this price point and type of specs. However, the keys on this laptop are their biggest frustration.

These are not backlit and come with low-contrast silk screening and blue color letters printed on it.

It makes them difficult to see in lowly lit settings. If matching with the blue colored cover trim is the point, then it is not a good one.

Typically, a white or a phosphorescent print on the keys would have been better, they suggested.

Other users said everything good about this laptop including its compact, durable and rugged design.

They said that the water-resistant keys are an innovative and useful inclusion, the battery life is excellent, the access to the internet is fast and secure, and saving their work and creating a back-up automatically helps them a lot.

A few adult users feel that this system is certainly rugged and fairly immune to viruses but lacks a good quality screen and a better keyboard.

It is good for traveling and does not take much to get used to the Chrome operating system.

It also offers a few nice proprietary rewards such as not having to right click but simply tap with two fingers instead for correcting words.

It is a good feature for those who write a lot and need an easy workflow.

Other Expert Views

According to Top New Review, this is a good laptop for kids to use in school due to its rugged design. With the spill resistant keyboard with larger font and rubber bumpers at the edges, this is a no fragile laptop, but lacks a dedicated graphics chip.

TechRadar emphasizes on the sturdy built and blue reinforced rubber material at the edges that add to the ruggedness in its design. The kid-friendly modular design would have been even better with a touchscreen, they said.

Laptop Mag praises the price and specs of this laptop suitable for kids and adults to use in any environment. However, they regretted the fact that this ruggedized machine is not a do-it-all computer.
