Read Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 gaming laptop review and see the price. The Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 gaming laptop is quite a reliable device to work and play games like Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number on it.

The specs and features of this laptop offer a much faster and better all-round performance.

The design of it is quite good, though nothing exceptional, to catch your eye. It is quite elegant to look at and most importantly is slim, light, and sleek to carry and use it anywhere.

In spite of its slim chassis, the GTX 1080 inside with Max Q specifications enables it to maintain the temperature of the GPU due to its lower TDP.

However, this comes at a cost of its performance, which is decreased slightly in comparison to those higher graphics cards that come without this tech.

Adding to its reliable, faster and quieter operation is the processor, the adequate amount of RAM and storage that allows multitasking and faster boot up, and the cooling system that allows playing or working on this computer for a long time at a stretch.

The comprehensive selection of ports and connectivity support allows using the system anywhere, indoors or outdoors, most reliably. However, the very short battery life may need you to stay close to a charging outlet outdoors.

This really is a device for users who are not on a budget but with its relatively high price to performance ratio, it will prove to be a dependable technological ally for people who want to play or work conveniently on their laptop.

Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 Gaming Laptop Review

Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501VI Gaming Laptop

Buy for: Better VR and gaming experience, slim and sleek design, Thunderbolt 3, G-Sync feature.

Beware of: Poor battery life, upgrading options, it getting warm under load, no SD card reader slot.

Best uses for: Multiple gaming, Final Fantasy XIV, PUBG, Garry’s Mod, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, Killing Floor and other purposes.

Verdict

Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 gaming laptop is one of the slimmest laptops available in the market with a good enough set of specs to play and work on it easily. However, the poor battery life and mini trackpad are serious issues.

Design and Build

The design and build of Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 gaming laptop is pretty impressive, if not unique, and is primarily based on the needs of the customer.

However, this gaming laptop does not have a professional look. It is more of a gamer laptop. Therefore, if you are looking for something else, stay away from it.

However, it is symmetric, light, and slim, and therefore, easy to carry. It weighs less than 5 pounds and it can be picked up in one hand. The build quality is also quite sturdy and will last for a long time.

The lid is built from brushed aluminum material, which is a bit of a fingerprint magnet, and is fixed to the base with a strong hinge, but you can open it with one hand.

The hinge holds the screen firmly and does not allow opening it more than 120 degrees.

The full HD screen is pretty large but comes with a thick bezel all around. The top bezel houses the webcam and the microphones and the lower bezel is for the logo.

This screen has a reasonably high refresh rate of 120 Hz and supports Nvidia G-Sync feature that enhances the image quality and sharpness.

The keyboard is something that attracts the eyes. There is no palm rest as such. This space is above the keyboard.

The primary reason for it is to keep the innards of the laptop cool with better ventilation. There are actually tiny holes in this space that keeps the keyboard from becoming hot.

The location of the trackpad is also very unusual, at the right, instead of below the RGB backlit keyboard. However, it is quite good and responsive.

Performance

Though different models of Asus ROG Zephyrus come with different variants of processor and graphics card, this GX501 gaming laptop comes with an Intel Core i7 processor belonging to the 7th generation and an Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics card with Max Q design.

The 7th generation Intel Core i7 7700 HQ processor is the most common and favorite choice of several high-end notebooks.

This is primarily due to the fact that it has a pretty wide range of operating speed that ranges between 2.8 GHz and up to 3.8 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost technology. This helps it to make the best use of each of its multiple cores.

This processor can provide the same level of performance for a long time and supports the Hyper Threading technology.

This means that all of the 8 threads of the four cores of it will work simultaneously to provide faster and more accurate results.

There will be no CPU throttling, though the Turbo Boost ability may be hindered under maximum load due to the temperature difference.

The graphics performance of the laptop is quite decent mainly due to the Max Q design as well as the high 8 GB of GDDR5 memory of the graphics card.

The visual pleasure is also enhanced by the 256-bit interface and 250 shaders and an advanced architecture that helps it clock much higher bandwidth at the core clock.

This also results in a significant GPU Boost, as much as 15% faster than the original version without Max Q design.

The most significant aspect of this graphics card is that it can maintain its performance at a high level consistently for a long period of time.

All these significantly enhance the image rendering process and visual pleasure of the users.

However, the Intel HD graphics 630 that is integrated in the processor cannot be used due to the absence of switchable graphics.

The Windows 10 professional operating system will enhance the user experience even more with its better features and functionality.

The good thing about this operating system is that it not only comes with all the features that you will get in Windows 10 Home operating system but also a few other useful ones as well.

These include Bitlocker, Remote desktop, device guard and more apart from the normal Mail, Microsoft Edge, Continuum, Cortana, Windows Hello, an improved start Menu.

RAM & Storage

You will be able to multitask on this laptop very easily irrespective of the number of browser tabs you keep open or the apps you want to use.

The 16 GB of DDR4 memory has a bandwidth of 2400 MHz which is fast enough to facilitate the process.

And, as for the storage, you will get a lot of storage space in the system itself in the 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD storage.

This is pretty fast in booting up the system and apps so that you do not have to wait for a long time to indulge in your gameplay.

Ports & Connectivity

As for the connectivity options of this laptop, you will get varied and many ports in the form of as many as four USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, a USB Type C port that will support transferring data at a speed of 40 Gbps to Thunderbolt compatible devices, as well as an HDMI 2.0 video output port that supports a 4K external display at up to 60 Hz refresh rate.

The system also supports wireless data transfer at a fast speed with its 802.11ac protocol support of the wireless communication standard.

Battery Life

This is perhaps one of the biggest issues of the Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 gaming laptop.

The system comes with a 4-cell lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 50 watt-hours so that it fits in within the slim chassis of it.

However, and unfortunately, this battery drained out pretty fast. You can consider yourself to be very lucky if it lasts for as little as 3 hours for normal usage!

The battery will actually last for up to 2 hours or so during web browsing and video playback, and that too at a lower screen brightness at 150 nits in both cases and with no highlight as well.

And, when you put the system under stress, it will last for less than an hour!

Additional Features

The Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 gaming laptop comes with an efficient and powerful cooling system that will allow you to play games like Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number on it for a long time.

The efficacy of this cooling system is enhanced by the ROG Active Aerodynamic Cooling technology. It increases the speed of the fans and thereby the airflow inside the chassis.

The hot air is dissipated properly through the vents to ensure a better thermal management and a much cooler CPU and GPU in operation.

The audio system of this laptop is pretty good and produces a decent sound output that will enhance your visual and gaming pleasure.

It consists of two stereo speakers that feature Smart Amp technology. This technology not only helps in producing clear and loud sound but will also protect the speakers from any damage by setting proper thermal thresholds.

The HD webcam included in the system design is just good for making video calls since it is nothing exceptional as compared to other laptops that come with a 720p camera as well.

The dual array of mics is just supportive to make sure that the conversation is clear enough when you make a video call.

The apps and software that are included in this system are the Gaming Center which is a combination of several different sub-apps and tools such as ROG Aura that helps in configuring the keyboard illumination, Sonic Studio II for making sound adjustments, and Sonic Radar II which helps in tracking the enemies in a game in a much better way.

It is also equipped with Turbo Gear which is a tool that you can use for optional overclocking from the default mode to the Extreme mode.

What Do Users Think About Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501?

This laptop is quite good with its decent set of specs and performs wonderfully, said a few users who were surveyed.

It is powerful and portable, it is thin and sleek, and is good enough to beat most of the desktops available on the market today.

It can be used easily for work or for playing games and is quite reliable to run a variety of software such as UE 4, Maya, Unity, Substance Painter and more, pretty flawlessly.

However, it is the poor battery life that is their primary concern and wanted Asus to look into it seriously.

The screen quality and performance of this laptop is pretty good, said a few other users.

Though it is not like a Retina display but is above those screens that comes with any average gaming laptops.

The high refresh rate allows running games at a smooth and consistent frame rate to make them look seamless.

It is also good in size and weight, they said. The cooling system is good enough and allows them to do some heavy processing or graphics intensive tasks on it, without burning their lap.

However, they felt that Asus could have done away with the unusual design of the keyboard and the mini trackpad.

This system is good enough to purchase though it seems to have some initial BIOS related issues, said some other users.

This may lead to some booting up issues and screen tears as well. There also seems to be some issues with the motherboard, they said.

However, the processor and graphics of this laptop are pretty good to render a faster and better performance.

This laptop is just as good as it is advertised, a few specific users found. Check out ROG ZEPHYRUS GX501 Manual.

The Max Q tech adds to its level of performance and the good screen that this laptop comes with complements its performance pretty well.

In spite of having a 15-inch screen this system is pretty small and light to carry it along wherever they wanted to.

However, it is not free from drawbacks. The upgrading options, poor battery life and kind of ‘okay’ webcam are some significant ones, according to them.

Other Expert Views

Apart from the poor battery life, Ultrabook Review feels that there is a lot to like about this laptop. It is thin and light in design, has a decent screen, and offers a good value with its build and quality of specs which offers a lot of horsepower.

TopTenReview says that this is a good laptop to play and work but has a very unusual design. This can lead to some inconvenience while using. Otherwise, it is quiet and powerful and offers a performance above par with its good specs.

On the other hand, Digit feels otherwise. They think that this laptop bridges the gap between portability and performance pretty well but it is designed for those who have deeper pockets and simply want a toy to enjoy. It is not for everyone.
