Verdict

The Asus VivoBook S510UA is an enticing and affordable little laptop. It has a pretty good and large display, high performing specs, and solid selection of ports. All these ensure a snappy performance but, it is the weak battery life that will let it and you down a bit if there is no power socket near you, a genuine issue for school-goers.

Design and Build

The design of this device is pretty attractive but the most unique thing about it is its sleek and slim chassis.

This makes it quite light in weight, just 4.40 pounds to be exact, and quiet portable, so much so that you may tend to think that without a protective case you may damage the system if you carry it outdoors often.

The display of this machine is quite good and large enough to enable you to see the images clearly.

These images look crisp and sharp on this full HD display that is built with Nano Edge technology.

This ultra-narrow 0.3-inch bezel provides the display with more real estate with an unbelievable 80% screen to body ratio.

This thin bezel does not only reduce the weight of the laptop but also helps to fit the 15.6-inch screen comfortably into its small 14-inch frame.

You can see the images clearly from any side, thanks to the Wide View technology that provides it with a 178° wide viewing angle. This makes it a perfect screen to share with other people.

The ergonomic design of the backlit keyboard included in Asus VivoBook S510UA is a perfect tool that ensures comfortable and accurate typing in low-light settings.

It is sturdy and the keys have a 1.4 mm travel and a decent tactile feedback. The keys are large enough to assure faster and better typing experience irrespective of the hand size.

The trackpad on this device is built to be quite smooth and responsive to touch. A tad smaller in size by today’s standards, the perfect placement of it ensures that your palm does not touch it while typing.

Performance

The performance of the system is high mainly due to the efficient and powerful Intel Core i7 processor of the 7th generation.

Apart from the 4 MB cache of this processor, it has an operational speed ranging between 2.7 GHz and 3.5 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost technology.

The processor also ensures an uninterrupted and better video playback with upgraded media engine and a powerful enough graphics card.

This Intel HD graphics chip is however integrated and supports basic computing tasks as well as playing some basic and common games.

However, it does not let down the overall performance of the system with the adequate support it gets from the powerful processor.

This ensures that the images are produced seamlessly and the colors and contrast remain constant, bold, and vivid, even if the images are viewed from extreme angles.

The Windows 10 operating system is good enough by its standards and is easy to use.

However, at times you may find that it may not allow you to have total control over the operating system as the Professional version would.

RAM & Storage

The 8 GB of RAM of the laptop may seem to be low enough compared to today’s standards where most of the models are equipped with 16 GB of RAM, but the DDR4 nature of the RAM makes it good enough to support easy and better multitasking on the system using different browser tabs and apps at the same time.

As for the storage, most of the budget laptops come with a single storage device, a spinning drive C: disk to be precise, to store all of the data and programs. However, this specific model is equipped with two storage devices namely, a C: drive and a D: drive.

The C: drive is an M.2 SSD with 128 GB capacity, which means it does not have any spinning disk and is used to store the programs and the operating system primarily.

This is much faster than the HDD and fails less frequently, therefore helping the programs to run faster.

The D: drive is a 1 TB HDD with a spinning disk that spins at 5400 rpm. This huge space offered by this drive is mainly used to store all your files and data and not the programs.

Therefore, the combo storage ensures both, blazing transfer speeds of an SSD and a huge storage capacity of an HDD.

This improves the performance of the system dramatically as well as reduce the load and boot times, increase the read and write speeds, and even provides protection and faster access to the physical data stored in each individual drive.

Ports & Connectivity

There are lots of connectivity options offered by this device to the users. It is equipped with one USB 3.1 port with reversible USB Type C connector.

This means, irrespective of the way you plug-in, the right side is always up making it simple and quick to connect any external device or peripherals to it.

This USB 3.1 port also comes with the capability to allow data transfer at a speed that is five times faster in comparison to any legacy USB 2.0 ports.

In addition to the USB 3.1 Type C Gen 1 port, you will also get USB 3.0, USB 2.0, and an HDMI 1.4 ports as well.

That is not all. The system design also includes an SD card slot, apart from a headphone-out and audio-in combo jack and DC-in slot.

All these offer a hassle-free and extensive compatibility with a varied range of displays and projectors.

You will get lightning-fast wireless connectivity from the dual band 802.11ac wi-fi network.

Irrespective of the congestion in network traffic and interference, it will ensure that you always stay connected. The system also supports Bluetooth 4.1 technology.

Battery Life

The battery life is perhaps the only major area where this system seems to have fallen back a bit. It is far too less than what is advertised.

Though it mainly depends on the usage, you will not get more than 6 hours of power on a single charge, if not less.

However, the good thing is that this 42-watt-hour lithium polymer battery comes with a fast-charging ability allowing it to regain up to 60% of its total capacity in as less as 49 minutes.

Additional Features

The speakers of the system come with Asus Sonic Master technology and are expertly tuned to deliver loud and clear audio output.

This technology comes with a professional-grade codec that helps in accurate encoding and decoding of the audio.

There is also an extra signal tuning and processing feature that helps in refining the sound by adding minute details and filtering out any noise from it.

However, all these features are able to improve the audio clarity but the large speakers, resonance chambers, and amplifiers fail to provide a truly immersive audio experience due to the lack of bass, leaving a few areas to look into.

There is also an HD webcam integrated on the top, thin bezel of the screen. This camera takes quite good pictures that enhances the video chatting experience.

However, there are lots of areas in it that need improvements to make it perform above par.

The fingerprint reader is built on the trackpad and located at the top-right corner. This allows unlocking your Windows user profile as well as log in to any app after it scans your fingerprint.

It hardly takes more than a second and is quite good in performance.

However, they all admitted that they were a bit unhappy about its disappointing battery life, which is certainly not a long lasting one, as claimed by the manufacturer.

The keyboard and touchpad of the system appealed to a lot of users. The backlit keyboard is soft and comfortable to type on and the trackpad is quite good and responsive.

The fingerprint reader integrated was another aspect that made them happy as that allowed them to log in quickly, safely, and without too much of a hassle.

The screen is big enough and looks nice, said a few parents who bought this unit for their children going to school.

It is extremely light in weight which makes it easy to carry the device daily to school and back. The price and performance ratio of the laptop is something that made them happy.

It is easy to set up and is fast enough in doing whatever it is asked to do, they said, while reiterating the opinion of their children.

A few users however, had different views about the laptop, though nothing very bad.

They said that though the thin and sleek system has been performing up to their expectations, but, that was short-lived due to the original operating system of this device.

They said that it would have been better if it came pre-installed with Windows 10 Pro because that would have allowed them to have better control over the Windows OS. It would have also made the system perform much faster.

The device is quiet during operation but does get a little warm at the bottom, said a few users, who also did mention that there is nothing to create a fuss about it.

They, however, said that it took some for them to get used to the trackpad.

Apart from that, they were overall happy with the performance of this system which may not drive away the expensive laptops but is good enough to serve the cash strapped buyers quite well.

The fact that the price of the system does not compromise with its features and hardware specs is what impressed a few other users.

They were happy to get a good and solid backlit keyboard, a fingerprint reader, a huge combination of SSD and HDD storage that offers speed and performance, as well as a lot of connectivity options at this price point.

However, they regretted that the system does not come with a Thunderbolt 3 port and good quality speakers.

This device comes with its pros and cons, just like any other model does, said a few specific users who were happy that they got their hands on it.

They mentioned the unique selling points of the system that makes it a good enough bargain in spite of its disappointing battery life.

These are its instinctively nice look and small portable size, a decent processor, the full HD IPS display, and the traditional layout. The price is also a common appreciable factor.

Other Expert Views

It is one of the lightest laptops one may get within this price range, says Laptop Mag. It is power-packed for higher performance but usability issues are a bit annoying and lets it down a bit.

TechRadar suggests that this is the laptop for those who want to have better screen quality and higher storage but an affordable laptop. However, the webcam quality could have been better, they opined.

The laptop offers quite a decent performance but the level is not as high as other models, says Toptenreviews. They were unhappy with the compromises made in other places.
