Asus ZenBook UX330UA Laptop Review
Buy for: Extensive connectivity, SD card reader, minimal bloatware, good audio quality, solid aluminum chassis, fingerprint reader.
Beware of: Not expandable memory, noisy fan, coil whine, constantly disconnecting wi-fi.
The Asus ZenBook UX330UA is an amazing laptop that promises good performance. The battery is quite long lasting and the system boots in nearly five seconds. However, the fan noise can be a bit annoying at times and the screen may seem to be a bit too small for professional computing tasks. Apart from that, this thin and light laptop is worth investing on.
Design and Build
This Asus model is thin and light and the design may not be stunning but is good enough, especially considering its price point.
The all-aluminum body, except the bottom, gives it the desired durability and robustness to take it and work outdoors.
The screen is pretty small, which looks even smaller due to the thick bezel all around, is pretty good to deliver images with just the right kind of brightness and color accuracy.
This matte finish, LCD screen comes with Full HD feature which ensures that you see the images with all its details.
This screen comes with an anti-glare property that eliminates the distracting reflections when you use the system in a brightly lit room or outdoors under the sun.
The wide view technology provides an amazing viewing angle of 178-degrees which will help you to share the screen with others during making a presentation of your files or watching an HD movie on it.
You can type on the keyboard for hours at a stretch in ultimate comfort, thanks to its ergonomic design that makes it more responsive.
This solid keyboard, though it does not have a separate 10-key numeric keypad, comes with backlit keys with three specific light settings.
These keys have an optimal travel distance of 1.5 mm and quite an impressive feedback. The square keys make it look more like a good-quality chiclet keyboard.
The rubberized palm rest adds to your typing comfort and experience as well, even in dark or dimly lit settings.
The precision touchpad on the palm rest is large and wide and is glass-covered for protection but is quite responsive to touches.
It is built with exclusive technology that is most commonly used in the touchscreens of modern smartphones.
This provides it with a very high sensitivity and an incredible accuracy. Check out Best Laptops with Fingerprint Reader.
There is also a fingerprint reader incorporated at the top right corner of this large and wide touchpad, which is a bit too sensitive but a welcome inclusion.
It is built to look beautiful with its brilliant diamond-cut beveled design all around its edges.
Much unlike most of the other thin and portable laptops, this ZenBook is specially designed and built for the enthusiast class of users who work on several different types of apps, including photo and video editing, QuickBooks, and more, even while on the go.
Whether you perform basic day-to-day computing jobs or work on your business account using QuickBooks, the latest Intel core i5 processor not only promises but actually delivers a high performance with its high processing speed.
Which ranges between 2.5 GHz at the base clock and 3.1 GHz at the boost clock.
Though it comes with two cores and four threads only, but you can rely on its 14 nm lithography, 3 MB smart cache, 4 GT/s bus speed, and an average TDP of 15 W with a high of 25 W at 2.70 GHz frequency and a low of 7.5 W at 800 MHz down frequency.
All these specs ensure a faster data processing and a better result always.
The Intel HD graphics chip, though integrated, has got all the power to ensure you have a wonderful viewing experience.
It will support all your computing needs with its graphics performance and even while playing a few basic games on this system with its 300 MHz base frequency and 1 GHz max dynamic frequency along with an all-round graphics output.
The Windows 10 operating system, as you may already know, comes with 64-bit architecture, useful features and functionality that will allow you to be more creative in your ideas, vision, and work.
You can get your job done most comfortably and efficiently and not worry about the security aspect as it provides protection against antivirus, firewall, and ransomware at no additional cost.
Play games or work on QuickBooks, this is the operating system you can rely on fully.
RAM & Storage
It will support all basic computing jobs and play some games with its 1866 MHz bandwidth, which is enough to suit the other specs of this laptop.
It will support multitasking, though nothing intensive of sorts. However, this memory is not expandable.
However, the 256 GB storage space is adequate enough for a laptop that is good for general purpose, educational needs, and business finance computing needs on Excel or QuickBooks.
Once again, you cannot upgrade this SSD as that will void the warranty, though the system supports up to 512 GB of SSD storage.
Ports & Connectivity
The system comes with extensive connectivity options in the form of a Micro HDMI port, USB Type C ports and D-Sub.
The unit is equipped with two super-fast USB 3.0 ports built in it and a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type C port that has the power to transfer data at a speed that is ten times faster in comparison to the USBs belonging to the previous generation.
In order to enhance the performance and connectivity options, one USB port is powered with an USB Charger+ which ensures faster charging of the USB 3.0 devices at a speed that is 50% more.
The good thing about this port is that it can charge up the devices even when the laptop itself is in the sleep mode or is shut down.
There is also an SD card reader slot that will allow easier and faster data transfer, and, of course, one headphone-out and microphone-in combo jack.
You will get a strong and stable internet connection due to the ability of this unit to support 802.11a/c standard of wi-fi networking.
In addition to that, this system also supports Bluetooth 4.1 technology.
The battery life of this system is also quite impressive, which, of course varies depending on the type of usage.
Typically, this lithium-ion battery will last anywhere between 10 and 12 hours when you put this system under light use such as browsing the web, doing homework of the school, and basic business computing.
When you use this laptop for your day-to-day computing tasks at home or in your office, the battery may die after supplying power for about 8 to 9 hours.
On the other hand, when you put this new laptop for extreme use, the battery will not last for more than 2.5 hours!
Considering all these usage types as well as the applications run on this machine, the battery life of it is quite good and adequate, all in all.
The audio system of this laptop is nothing to be ignored.
Though you will get a much better performance from a set of Harman Kardon speakers, it is the features and technology that the audio system of this device comes with that makes all the difference in its sound output.
Coming with Sonic Master technology, it provides an effortless audio control using the several profiles that are pre-set in it.
All you have to do is choose the most preferred one and get an optimized listening experience.
If you are an audiophile, you can even choose the more advanced controls available if you want to specifically customize the sound and each of its parameters like the sound level, clarity, and detail, to create your personal profile.
The advanced fingerprint reader built in the system is a bit finicky but is good enough to touch.
It allows a faster, more secure, effortless, and one-touch login to the system with its Windows Hello support.
There is also a good quality HD webcam built in the system, located at the center of the top bezel.
It can take good pictures and upload it along with clear sound due to the integrated mics that will enhance your experience while making a video call.
You will get an Accidental Damage Protection for one year along with a Zero Bright Dot Guarantee for 30 days from the manufacturer.
This is the most comprehensive coverage that will cover your system against spills, drops, and electrical surges as well as a flawlessly performing screen with zero bright dots.

What Do Users Think about Asus ZenBook UX330UA?
Asus seems to have nailed everything right with this model, well almost, said a few users.
With a few minor downsides, this laptop seems to be an excellent upgrade of the previous models, they added.
However, they did not hesitate to point out a major flaw in this laptop which is the issue with the fans when the CPU is put under heavy load.
The build quality of this device is excellent, considering its price point, they said.
The FHD display is quite decent in performance with better color accuracy and contrast and has less light-bleed.
The best thing, according to them, is the inclusion of the new profile which enables them to switch display modes.
The keyboard of this laptop seems to be much improved in comparison to the previous models, said a few specific users.
It comes with backlit keys, which is a huge advantage for them allowing them to work in darker settings, and the keys have a very nice travel and feel.
The trackpad is also much improved, though a bit different, as compared to the previous model, they pointed out. It does take some time to get used to it.
Some of the users liked the security features of the system. The fingerprint reader, they said is very responsive and allows a safer and faster sign in using the Windows Hello feature.
This new authentication feature on Windows 10 operating system uses biometrics for allowing access, which, they said, makes this system all the more reliable.
Booting up in just about 5 seconds, this system impressed most of the users with its high level of performance.
However, they complained about the read and write speeds of the SSD, which, they feel, still needs some improvement.
The processor is good enough with a decent clock speed, though during some processes the fan spins fast and makes some noise which is quite annoying for a ZenBook, they said.
The system comes with a lot of useful input and output ports of good quality, said a few photographers who use this system for their jobs.
Though it is not meant for intensive photo and video editing jobs, the inclusion of a USB Type C port which is compatible with the adapters is very good for them as they can use it as an extra USB 3.0 port.
Most importantly, they said, it comes with an SD card reader, which is very welcome for all photographers as well as all professional content developers.
Lack of upgradeability is a major downside of this laptop, said a few users. Check out ZenBook UX330UA Manual.
The RAM cannot be upgraded and they have to deal with the available 8 GB of it.
As for the M.2 SSD storage, the system does allow upgrading it up to 512 GB but it is very hard an attempt, they said, because the bottom panel is difficult to open.
And since the bottom of this laptop is made of plastic, putting added pressure may result in cracking it.
