Asus ZenBook UX430UA Laptop Review

Asus ZenBook UX430UA

Buy for: Extensive connectivity, fast performance and storage, sleek and lightweight design, upgradable memory, durable aluminum body.

Beware of: Integrated graphics, coil whine, time to wake up from sleep, getting warm while multitasking.

Verdict

The Asus ZenBook UX430UA offers a high performance with mix features and functionality. It costs much less than other laptops that come with similar specs but comes with a more vibrant display, outstanding design, and better audio. However, a dedicated graphics card would have added more value to it and enhanced its performance even more.

Design and Build

The design of this laptop is at par its high level of performance, and it includes every aspect of it.

The system comes with a 14-inch screen, which may seem to be a bit small, given the fact that most of the laptops today come with a 15-inch display.

However, this 14-inch screen in a small 13-inch chassis does really well when it comes to its performance.

It is all due to its design that includes the narrow bezels, especially on its two sides, that makes it look bigger and offers a larger screen real estate, though it is not a touchscreen.

This full HD screen comes with a wide view feature of up to 178° degrees which allows easy sharing of the screen for collaborative work and also allows you to see the images clearly from any angle without degrading the color reproduction or contrast.

The anti-glare property of this display allows it to use the system outdoors and not worry about the annoying reflections.

It also supports 100% sRGB color gamut which ensures more vivid colors and more accurate pictures in comparison to any standard display.

The productivity is never compromised, thanks to the pretty responsive keyboard and trackpad built in the system.

The precision trackpad is large enough and located at the center of the chassis which ensures easy navigation and comfortable typing.

It comes with a glass covering that allows smoother control and gliding of your fingers on it.

It supports handwriting as well as multi-finger gestures and the palm-rejection technology that prevents any inconvenience while typing fast.

The backlit keyboard has a solid, single-piece design, of course, with no separate 10-key number keypad.

It is ergonomically designed to offer a better typing experience. The keys are full size and have a 1.4 mm key travel along with a comfortable feel.

However, the design of the keys could have been a bit better because the keyboard still seems to be a bit mushy.

This sleek laptop is built from premium quality aluminum material. This does not only make the chassis of the laptop strong and extremely durable but also keeps the weight of it low, in fact, as low as 2.75 pounds only.

Performance

The Intel Core i7 processor comes from the latest 8th generation and has an operating speed ranging between 1.8 GHz at the base and 4.0 GHz at the boost clock.

The data strings you throw at it will be processed in quick time as it will utilize its 4 GT/s bus speed, 14 nm lithography, four cores and eight threads.

The 8 MB smart cache along with a TDP difference of 15 W ranging between 10 W at 800 MHz down frequency and 25 W at 2 GHz maximum frequency also adds to its performance level.

The graphics chip, though integrated, is by no means a weak performer.

Though it will not support high-end computing tasks or graphics intensive gaming, it is powerful enough to deliver images seamlessly with higher color accuracy.

It is all due to its high operating speed which ranges between 300 MHz and 1.15 GHz.

It can even support 4K resolution at 60 Hz and eDP/DP/HDMI/DVI graphics output within a reproduction range of 24 Hz and 60 Hz and at 4096 x 2304 pixels.

Its OpenGL 4.4, DirectX 12, and Intel Quick sync and clear video support only enhances the performance of it as well as the system on the whole.

The Windows 10 operating system that is pre-installed in the system needs no further introduction or explanation about its performance and functionality.

With better and more useful operational and security features, this operating system will enable you to perform your work in the best possible way and stay connected to the people you want to when you are working remotely.

Features like Quick Assist will help you to share and view a computer to help someone remotely, the Task View allows you to see your past activities, search files and photos quickly, snap different apps side by side, and much more.

RAM & Storage

The laptop comes with a fast storage and memory. The on-board DDR3 RAM of the system is 16 GB which is quite enough for multitasking, thanks to its 1866 MHz bandwidth.

In case you need some more boost in the performance of the system, you can easily upgrade the memory up to 32 GB.

The storage of the system is also quite adequate. The 512 GB space is enough to store a lot of large and small files, pictures, videos, and music.

It ensures faster boot up of the apps as well as quick access to the stored documents in it.

Ports & Connectivity

The system does not lag behind in providing connectivity options to its users. It comes with a USB Type C port which is reversible.

This means that it is easy to connect without any hassles due to its any-way-up design.

It also comes with a data transfer speed which is ten times faster than the older USB 2.0 ports.

There is also a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port along with a Micro HDMI port.

Though a Type C port that could charge the laptop and a Thunderbolt 3 connection would have been more welcome, these ports are quite enough to connect your displays, projectors and other peripherals to the laptop.

There is also an SD card reader for faster transfer of files. You will also get a slot to connect your headphone or microphone.

The 802.11a/c wi-fi standard will allow a faster and stronger internet connection and its Bluetooth 4.1 support also adds to your connectivity options for your different Bluetooth-enabled devices.

Battery Life

Though it may sound a bit optimistic, the battery life of this system, as rated by Asus, is up to 9 hours. However, that is on basic usage and particularly under stringent conditions.

In reality, when you put the system under heavy use, this lithium polymer battery may last for a period half of that. This is rather unexpected as to what Asus advertised.

On the whole, for mixed usage you can expect a respectable life ranging between 6 to 8 hours from this battery that charges up pretty fast.

Additional Features

The system comes with a fingerprint reader built on the top of the trackpad.

It allows faster and safer log in with a single touch with its Windows Hello support because you will not need to type in the password every time you want to log in.

The sound system of this device comes with Harmon Kardon audio technology and the next generation Asus SonicMaster audio technology.

Working together with the Asus Golden Ear team the audio experts at Harmon Kardon ensure astonishing sound output with no distortion and excellent sound clarity, thanks to the precise mix of superior hardware and software such as smart amplifier technology.

There is a HD webcam on the top bezel of the screen that can take decent pictures which you can use to make videos or during your video call.

The built-in microphones are also good enough to capture the sound, loud and clear.

What Do Users Think about Asus ZenBook UX430UA?

A few users said that this device proves that a sleek, portable, and powerful laptop does not need to be expensive.

This 14-inch laptop has a thin and light chassis but comes with all those components that are necessary for a high-end performance.

The webcam quality and placement, the responsiveness of the trackpad and the keyboard, the adequate amount of RAM and storage, nothing seems to have been compromised to cut down the cost, they said while praising Asus.

If they could do away with the loud fan noise and coil whine, this would have been one of the best laptops on the market today.

This system is extremely portable but comes with some serious specs, said a lot of users. The 8th generation processor can take on any tasks and fulfill it with aplomb.

The SSD is fast and adequate enough to store a lot of files and projects they work on. Check out Asus ZenBook UX430UA Manual.

With its powerful performance and attractive design, this is a good alternative, though not the perfect one, to those that falters in running a lot of specific software programs.

It is useful for an average user, a professional, and even for the students, such as the nursing school students.

This portable laptop comes with a great keyboard and trackpad in particular that ensures easy operation, navigations, and completion of tasks, said a few users, who also said that this system is not the best value option though.

However, with its decent performance and functionality and the anti-glare screen makes it a good system to ensure high productivity, whether one uses it indoors or outdoors, they said, while they pointed out at some of its setbacks, such as the appalling fan noise.

They also said that there is some electrical noise which may cause some distraction during work.

This is an amazing and beautiful laptop which is powerful in spite of being extremely thin and light weight, said some of the users who use it for somewhat complex tasks such as music production using specific apps as well as playing some light games on it.

However, there is one significant problem that they encountered, which is the freezing of the screen, at times.

This may be due to the coil whine, they said, and is experienced especially when specific apps are run on it.

A few users suggested that this is one of the best laptops to use for work as well as in schools.

The nice display, the exterior quality, the sturdy keyboard, as well as the overall build quality is superb of this laptop, they said.

However, they felt that the trackpad of this sleek and lightweight device should have come with a better feel, though the tactility of the clicks is very prominent and nice.

They also said that the keyboard is a bit stiff which needs to be looked into and the power button should not have been on the top right corner because it really does not help.

The price-performance ratio of this laptop is very high, a few users commented. It is this aspect that makes up for most of its downsides, which are however not a deal breaker.

Therefore, they said that they were quite happy with their purchase of this laptop which even comes with a decent battery life and recharges quickly.

However, the back of the laptop seems to get hot pretty quickly while multitasking and even hotter when it is plugged in, making it a bit less than perfect.

Few users said that it is the laptop that they went for because they got everything that they wanted in a system that comes in an affordable package.

It comes with a lot of RAM and storage, enough for their work and need. All its specs are high performing which makes this system fast and hassle free to work on.

The best part of this system, they said, is that it comes with minimal bloatware.

One significant aspect that caused some sort of inconvenience for them is the power button which is extremely easy to activate.

It would have been better if it activated after holding it down for a second, they said.

Other Expert Views

Laptop Mag found that this Asus ZenBook has powerful specs and features for a fair price. The system is extremely portable and comes with a stunning screen, fantastic audio system, high performance assurance and a great value overall, but does not allow USB C charging.

Apart from the coil whine and its wake-up issues from sleep, this system does not seem to have any major setbacks, feels Laptop Media. The display is good enough to deliver images with good color reproduction and details, and the CPU and GPU combination is also quite good for its performance.

There is a lot to like and look for in this laptop, says PCMag. This ultraportable device will not break the bank and will not be short in its performance. The webcam placement, the keyboard, the trackpad, along with its hardware components, all make it a good laptop to invest on.
