Verdict

The Alienware M15 R3 is a pretty looking gaming laptop but not the best that you will get considering the price of it and its power balance. Still, the collection of hardware is reasonably good with good graphics support and a bright display.

Design and Build

The Dell Alienware M15 R3 gaming laptop comes with a sleek and slim design. It is a comfortable laptop to use for gaming and professional work.

It is elegant and stylish, has a durable chassis being built from high quality materials such as steel, copper, and magnesium alloy.

The keyboard is good, responsive, and looks good with the lights. It is easy to locate the navigational keys to have a better control while playing Icewind Dale on it.

The island-style keyboard with chiclet key size comes with 1.7 mm key travel distance, high tactile feedback, customizable AlienFX lighting, n-key rollover and anti-ghosting feature but with no separate numeric keypad.

The 15.6-inch screen is also quite good with Full HD resolution, an aspect ratio of 16:9, 72% NTSC color, and an 800:1 contrast ratio.

The high refresh rate makes the images look smooth and alive on this panel that comes with 7ms response time and 300 nits of brightness.

It also comes with an anti-glare property to keep the images softer to the eyes and offers Wide Viewing Angle of ±85°, both horizontally and vertically.

The touchpad is also quite responsive but is medium in size. The surface of it is smooth to allow your fingers to glide smoothly on it for a better navigation with multitouch gestures.

Performance

The performance of the Dell Alienware M15 R3 gaming laptop revolves basically on the processor and graphics which come in different variants.

Depending on your budget, you can go for an 8th generation i7 processor or an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 or 2070 variant as well.

This specific model under review comes with a 10th generation Intel Core i7 10750H processor with a huge Intel Smart Cache of 12 MB. It is powerful enough with a set of six powerful cores and twelve threads.

It can operate within a frequency ranging between 2.60 GHz and up to 5.00 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost technology.

However, having a 45W TDP it is a power-hungry processor, which is quite typical of such high-end processors.

The graphics performance of this laptop is also pretty reliable due to the combination of the Intel UGD graphics chip integrated in the processor as well as the dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card.

This graphics card comes with a 6 GB GDDR6 memory of its own which enables even this mid-range GPU to fortify its graphics rendering with a boost speed of 1200 MHz maximum.

Gamers as well as other professionals will get adequate support from the Windows 10 Home operating system installed in this system.

They will be able to make the best use of the useful and beneficial features of this operating system which includes and is not limited to a new and more improved Start Menu, Microsoft Edge, Mail, the personal assistant Cortana and more.

RAM & Storage

The decent set of specs of this laptop also includes an adequate amount of memory and storage.

It is equipped with a 16 GB memory with a reasonably high bandwidth of 2666 MHz and of DDR4 SDRAM variant. It will allow smoother and better multitasking while gaming or computing.

The 512 GB PCIe M.2 SSD storage of the laptop comes in two different slots of 256 GB each. Working in unison, it offers a reliable and faster performance when it comes to booting up.

Ports & Connectivity

This laptop comes with a pretty decent set of interface options. The locations of these I/O ports are well-placed to allow unhindered and convenient operation and better cable management.

The ports include USB 3.1 Type A Gen 1 ports, with PowerShare technology in one and USB Type C Thunderbolt 3 port that supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 and data transfer at 10 Gbps, DisplayPort 1.2, and 40 Gbps Thunderbolt.

There is also an HDMI 2.0B port with HDCP 2.2 output support, a Mini DisplayPort 1.4, one Alienware Graphics Amplifier port, one 1/8″ audio output port which is compatible with inline microphone headsets.

Apart from that, it is also equipped with one Micro SD 5.1 UHS II HD312 card reader slot.

The system also supports Killer Ethernet E3000 10/100/1000 LAN through the RJ 45 port and Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 (2×2) 802.11ax wireless connectivity along with Bluetooth 5.1 tech support.

This makes it a complete gaming and work laptop with better network communication.

Battery Life

The system comes with a 6-cell lithium-ion battery with 86-att-hour capacity for the desired power supply to operate. However, this battery will not last all day.

The battery life is pretty average, lasting for about 5 to 6 hours, top, for normal use. As for gaming and other power-hungry tasks, this battery will last for even a shorter time.

Additional Features

The cooling system is pretty advanced to manage the thermals of the innards of the laptop.

The exhaust vents of the system are well placed and are quite large to add to its cooling efficacy, though for normal use only.

It is however found that the system does get a bit warm when it is put under heavy load and during extended use.

The audio system of this laptop that comprises dual stereo speakers is also quite good to ramp up your visual, multimedia, and gaming experience.

The system also comes with a webcam integrated with a dual array of mics. However, the performance of this webcam is just average and is only good for making some simple videos and calls without expecting too much from it.
