If one wants to have a laptop that does not have a fingerprint reader, an optical drive, a high amount of RAM and storage, but comes with a touchscreen, high level of performance and a 2-in-1 design, then this Dell Inspiron 5481 2-in-1 laptop will not disappoint them.

Design and Build

The system comes with low-end specs but its set of features and design are not lean by any means.

It will suffice all your needs as well as prove to be a useful and affordable laptop, that too with a 2-in-1 convertible design.

The light weight and thin built will allow you to take the laptop anywhere and even use it on your daily commute.

The hybrid design allows you to flip the screen over and around to use it as a handheld, standalone tablet.

When you use it in the stand mode, the keyboard will face down so that it does not come in the way of your operation or entertainment experience.

If you want to use this device in the tent mode, the strong hinge will provide adequate support and the keyboard will face away from you.

In all these three modes, you can use the touchscreen seamlessly to interact using the Windows 10 Home operating system or simply watch a video easily because you will be able to see the screen right in front, with you positioned at the center of it.

Talking about the screen, though the 14-inch screen is LED backlit, which saves energy, and a touchscreen, which allows easy navigation, it is a TN and not an IPS display.

Therefore, you should not expect to get a wider viewing angle.

The resolution is also an HD and not a full HD, which means you will get to see images at 1366 x 768 pixels and not 1920 x 1080 pixels. This will make the images a bit less clear and sharp.

However, considering the fact that this is a good enough laptop to use for basic computing and gaming purposes, such a screen is quite expected in a budget laptop.

The tiny bezels allow packing a larger screen real estate onto a smaller case. The quality of this touchscreen, which responds quite well to swipes and taps, is not compromised.

A 1080p resolution would have been much better in terms of image quality, but, on a budget, a 720p screen will do just fine for streaming videos and doing some simple computing jobs, though it will not provide you with the benefits of added pixels and better fidelity.

The entire laptop, including its body, top and bottom lid, and the keyboard deck are all dark gray in color.

However, the bezel of the glossy screen is black which creates a fantastic contrast.

The design of the keyboard, which does not come with backlights, is designed to be easily accessible and solid enough to allow easy typing even for people having larger fingers.

The keys are quite large, well-spaced, and have a decent key travel to offer a high typing experience.

The one-piece touchpad is also built to be sturdy. It is quite wide and the build is quite good to allow smooth swiping of fingers. It comes with multi-touch and gesture support.

Literally, it is much better and comfortable than using a traditional mouse, if you do not want to use the touchscreen for some reason.

The performance of this laptop is sufficiently high due to the processor, which, in spite of belonging to the Intel Core i3 family, does well to process the given data strings at a considerably high speed.

The fact that it belongs to the 8th generation and has 4 MB of Intel smart cache, makes its dual cores and four threads take on whatever is thrown at it.

The processor operates within a speed range of 2.10 GHz at the base and 3.90 GHz at the boost clock.

This has a TDP range of 10 W at the lower frequency of 800 MHz and 25 W at 2.30 GHz maximum frequency, with an average of 15 W.

The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 plays its part well to keep the performance of the laptop consistently high.

Though it comes with a shared graphics memory, it is powerful enough with its design, technology and support to reproduce images with higher color accuracy and at a quite fast speed. This makes the images look seamless on the screen.

With its 300 MHz base and 1 GHz max dynamic frequency along with DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5, and Intel’s Quick and Clear Video support it can even deliver continuous images at high frame rates to 4K displays at 24 Hz.

The Windows 10 Home operating system comes with a 64-bit architecture which allows running almost every software that you need to on this computer.

With all its other features you will be able to do your jobs pretty fast and most accurately.

Apart from helping you in the navigation with its useful features it will also ensure that you have a safe and secure user experience.

If you want your kid to use this laptop in his or her school, you can even control their use with the parental control which will limit their internet use with features like geo tracking, screen time limits, content filters, and more.

If you use it to get your things done your way, you will also be up to date always. It will easily adapt to your work and style.

RAM & Storage

The amount of RAM is very low but this 4 GB of memory is enough for doing small computing tasks on this laptop.

This DDR4 memory will also allow you to do some simple multitasking with its 2666 MHz bandwidth.

Though it comes in one single slot, this RAM is upgradable up to a maximum of 16 GB.

The amount of storage in this system is also pretty low because 128 GB is nowhere near the current norm of 256 GB, at least.

However, this M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive is fast enough to add to the speed and performance of the device.

The unique aspect of these SSDs is that it comes with a Host Memory Buffer or HMB feature that uses the Direct Memory Access or DMA of PCI Express.

This enables it to use some of the DRAM of the system itself. This does not let the drive bring down or use too much of its own DRAM.

Add to that, it will provide the best performance for all daily computing tasks with its high sequential read and write speeds of up to 1200 Mbps and 800 Mbps, respectively.

This means you will have a faster data transfer speed as compared to any 2.5-inch SATA solid state drive.

Ports & Connectivity

The system offers quite a few ports and slots which includes one USB 2.0 slot port, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, and one HDMI 1.4b port to connect your external displays.

There is also a slot to use an SD card reader to transfer data and images at a high speed. This 3-in-1 card reader comes with SD, SDHC, SDXC support.

You can also use your headphones in the universal audio jack. Other slots in the device include a wedge-shaped lock slot, and one for power.

If you want to use the system to transfer your files through wireless networks, you can make the best use of the 802.11ac standard of wireless communication network that this device comes with.

You can also connect Bluetooth enabled devices to this computer through the Bluetooth 4.2 wireless connection support.

Battery Life

The battery life is something that Dell needs to look into seriously in this specific model. On an average, this 42-watt-hour lithium-ion battery will last for about 4 to 6 hours.

This may be enough for using this device by a school student or by an average user at home, but for business and other use, this seems to be pretty low.

However, if the system is used in a low power setting, the battery can last for up to 7 hours on daily use.

Nonetheless, this Inspiron 14 2-in-1 laptop comes with much less than all day battery power.

Additional Features

The laptop comes with a good quality 720p web camera. This HD webcam can capture better quality pictures.

The Dell Mobile Connect feature will help you to integrate the system with your smartphone.

This will help you to make calls, get notifications, send text messages, and even use all those favorite mobile apps of yours, all directly from the computer screen.

As for the audio output, though it is average and needs a lot of improvement, it will be enough to produce you quite a decent listening experience.

However, you will have a much better audio experience if you use your personal headphone.

The manufacturer offers a limited warranty for a year. However, if you want International support, you may have to upgrade that warranty.

What Do Users Think about Dell Inspiron 5481 2 in 1 laptop?

This is a relatively good laptop for a student or for small business owners but it comes with a very bad audio output, said a few users.

However, this issue can be dealt with successfully by using a good pair of headphones or a Bluetooth speaker.

Besides that, this computer is worth investing on due to its consistent performance and good value in return.

The system and the apps load pretty fast and the touchscreen is also pretty good to support its performance.

A decent battery life is what most of the users expected from this system, because a battery of 4 to 6 hours on an average is anything but good, considering the standard of laptops available today on the market, they said.

As for the other aspects they said that the apps and software also run pretty slow, other than the Microsoft store products.

The good thing is that the system design allows upgrading the RAM, which somewhat enhances the performance of the system.

It is good for a laptop with lower features, said a few users. Though it allows downloading only Microsoft products only, but, that is for the operating system, they said.

Once they upgraded the system and switched out of the S mode and installed Windows 10 Home operating system, everything seemed to work quite well.

It is a bit complicated, no doubt, but it is worth it for the sake of the performance of the system. Check out Dell Inspiron 5481 Manual.

Also, they said, it is unwise to expect a lot from the i3 processor. All in all, at this price point, this laptop is good enough for some basic computing and playing a few simple games.

Though every aspect of this laptop is good enough considering the price, the screen is simply awful, said a few users.

The viewing angle is small, the picture resolution is low, the tilt is slightly away, and the images have a poor color representation while the screen gets dark at times.

When they moved the screen slightly towards them, the images looked washed away quite notably.

This means that the images can only be seen clearly on the screen when it is viewed directly from the front of it.

They said that, even at its best settings, the screen is certainly not great or even good, but awful.

A few users loved this computer because it is fast in performance and comes with several ports.

Though the sound system needs some improvement so that it stays for the entire time the computer is on, it is a good gift for a teenager and for students going to school.

The best part of this budget laptop is that it comes with a 2-in-1 convertible design. This helped them to use it just the way they could and as they need for any specific computing job.

However, they thought it would have been better if it came with a fingerprint scanner or face recognition feature, but that may be asking a bit too much for a 2-in-1 budget laptop.

It is good to use for light gaming as well as for high school students, said a few parents. It has all the specs and features to meet all the expectations and needs of a school, in spite of being a lower end model.

They were impressed with its usability, apart from its consistent performance, which makes it one of the most perfect starter laptops for any teenager or young adult.

They suggested that it is good to consider this laptop to be a ‘trial’ machine which will even run Minecraft and Skype without any issue.

A few users were even shocked to see how well this laptop works with its low-end features and specs.

The touchscreen feature is extremely useful for playing games on it and also to do some homework, especially those jobs that need some drawing and a lot of writing.

The best part of it is that it can also be used as a tablet, they exclaimed. The response is pretty fast and apps and software load and work pretty quickly and very accurately on this machine.

Most importantly, the price of it is just perfect, neither too expensive nor too cheap, though the battery drains out a bit too fast.

Other Expert Views

When it comes to price and performance, this laptop proves to be pretty well balanced, feels Trusted Reviews. This means that a user needs to decide what exactly they want in a 2-in-1 laptop. The price undercuts most of the competitors but sacrifices in its features are made to keep it within budget.

CNET, on the other hand, feels that this is a nice little 2-in-1 laptop that comes at a reasonable price. It has a good enough keyboard and touchpad, pretty good processor and storage, but the resolution of the screen and RAM are both very low.

According to IT Pro, with a touchscreen and a versatility of a 2-in-1 convertible, there is nothing more to ask from it at this price. Though the processor, RAM, and storage are all low-end, it is enough to support some basic computing and gaming on this laptop.
