What are the difference between and external memory? The computer is also known for storing and reading data. Just like the human brain, the memory is used to store all the files and data on the computer.

The processing of the information is done on the computer and is then stored. Data or the information can be stored permanently or temporarily on the basis of the user’s preference and the choice of memory.

The Computer memory is divided into main memories. The first one is the “Primary memory” or the internal memory. The internal memory is also known as the main memory.

The internal memory holds the information and data while the program is working. The internal memory has limited storage space or capacity. They are fixed inside the computer making it less portable.

The internal memory cannot be taken anywhere without the computer because it is fixed inside the computer. The data gets lost if the power of the computers switches off and goes off, for any reason.

The internal memory falls under the “volatile memory” category. Internal Memory is a working memory. They are comparatively faster than the external memory.

And their appearance of the internal memory is a semiconductor memory. They are very essential for the computer. It is because the computer cannot run or operate without the internal memory or the main memory.

The internal is the primary memory found on the computer. They are of two types. The first one is the RAM or the Random Access Memory and the next one is the ROM of the Read Only Memory.

The RAM or the Random Access Memory temporarily stores files and data. It stores data at a time when the CPU or the Central Processing Unit is carrying out the task.

A better RAM leads to the computer to run faster. They even affect the performance and make the speed better. RAM lets the CPU read fewer data. The RAM is volatile and does require the power to process or work.

Users save all the files and information on the computer before they turn off the computer. The RAM is of two types. The first is the DRAM and the other is the SRAM.

The SRAM is faster than the DRAM. SRAM and DRAM are, therefore, found in many types. The next internal memory is the ROM or the Read Only Memory. If one stores the data then the data cannot be changed by the user.

It is a non-volatile memory. With the name, one can understand the data cannot be retrieved, changed, or even returned. Both of these belong to the internal memory.

The internal memory is connected to the Power Supply Unit or the PSU. The internal memory can be found in both computers and other devices like smartphones, tablets, and many more other devices.

Therefore, internal memory is the one found on the computer or the device. The current activated data or information is done by the primary memory. It also refreshes very quickly because it cannot store any data permanently.

The next comes the external memory. It is also known as “Secondary” memory. External Memory is not a working memory. Which means  They are the opposite of internal memory.

By the name, one can understand how an external memory does not perform the same function as the internal memory. Even though they both are used for storing data.

The external memory is slower than the internal memory. It is because they hold or store information and data for future use. One can read and even store data for the future purpose in the external memory.

They are non-volatile and are similar to ROM. Yet very different from both RAM and ROM (internal memory). The external memory does not belong to the computer enclosure.

The external memory is not connected to the computer the way the internal memory is connected. The external memory can be changed or replaced by the user if needed.

The memory cannot be lost because they are made to be stored for the future. They can be used on another computer if needed. Also, the Central Processing Unit or the CPU, does not need to obtain the memory.

The data is first transferred to the internal memory from the external memory. Then it is obtained or read by the computer. The external memory gets an additional power source.

The internal memory is a semiconductor memory. The internal memory consists of chips that are attached to the motherboard.

It is placed inside the computer. The RAM needs to be compatible with the motherboard for proper functioning.

External memory is not a semiconductor memory. It is magnetic and optical memories. The external memory consists of storage drives or devices like the optical drive and hard disk.

Which can be taken from one place to another. And is universal, which means it can be connected to every computer. It can be interchanged from one computer to another.

4. Speed

The internal memory has a fast access time. It is because the internal memory is directly connected to the CPU for better processing purposes. Which makes the processor work easy. Resulting in the computer’s speedy performance.

The CPU cannot access data from an external memory. Which leads to less processing purposes. And the speed decreases because it is not directly connected to the CPU.

5. Storage

The internal memory can store data faster than the external memory. But the data stored are temporary. And once the computer goes off the data stored will be lost.

The storage capacity of the internal memory is very limited and less. Also, the internal memory cannot store data which is an extensive or large amount of data.

On the other hand, the external memory can store a large amount of data. The data stored in the external memory is permanently stored.

For a large period of time until the user does not erase the data from the external memory. The data remains in the external memory even after switching off the computer.

The internal memory is very essential for the computer. It is because the computer will not be able to operate or run.

Even though the external memory serves the best as the internal memory. The external memory is less expensive compared to the internal memory. It can be interchanged and the shape mostly comes in a universal size.

It is beneficial because it’s more portable and stores a big amount of data. And also is responsible for the speed and performance of the computer. SSDs are a bit more expensive than the other external memory.
