HP Notebook 15-ay011nr & Variants Price

HP Notebook 15-ay011nr Review

HP Notebook 15-ay011nr

Buy for: A decent full HD screen at an affordable price, better multimedia performance, consistent productivity, fairly long battery life, attractive design.

Beware of: Non-backlit keyboard, absence of VGA port, older generation processor, lacking USB Type C port, lots of bloatware.

Best uses for: College students and other purposes.

The HP Notebook 15-ay011nr is affordable and good enough to replace a desktop. Though it does not include any high-end features in it compared to the competing laptops, it is very useful for the college students as well as home use.

Design and Build

The HP 15-ay011nr is not a thin laptop. This may be due to the fact that this model comes with an optical drive, a feature which most of the manufacturers now are found to be eschewing.

However, the good thing is that it is quite light in weight, weighing just 4.65 pounds.

The lid of this laptop has a black logo of HP on a silver textured base that looks stunning. Inside, there is a silver deck with black chiclet keyboard.

The trackpad comes with left and right click buttons. It is, however, located slightly off-center which may cause some inconvenience while typing.

The screen, though a full HD, does not offer a wide viewing angle or clarity as an IPS panel. It also comes with a thick bezel all around as well.

However, you can see the sharp images clearly from most of the angles, which is a good bargain for its price.

The pictures, videos and the graphics of the webpages look pretty decent and vibrant with details on this display.

The keyboard of this system is also pretty durable, though it does not come with backlit keys, making it difficult to work at night on it in a dark room.

However, the design is pretty good, the keys have a decent travel distance and are soft to touch to offer a pleasant feel and a comfortable typing experience.

The best part of it is that it comes with a separate 10-key numeric keypad, a useful feature for college students.

The HP 15-ay011nr is equipped with a 6th generation Intel Core i5 processor. This processor has two cores and a base clock speed of 2.3 GHz.

It is adequate enough to handle all the needs of any college students and help them with their projects and assignments with quick and more accurate results.

Adding to its performance and speed is the 8 GB DDR3L system memory is good enough to allow smoother multitasking on this laptop even with its 1600 MHz bandwidth with dozens of tabs and browsers open simultaneously.

On the other hand, the 1 TB storage will ensure that the apps, games and software have a decent loading speed.

However, it may not perform as desired when you want to download several HD TV shows.

The graphics needs are met quite comprehensively with the integrated Intel HD 520 graphics chip.

It is sufficient for basic computing tasks by the college students and the home users meeting their demands efficiently with its 4169 MB total video memory.

The performance of this system is further enhanced by the Windows operating system. Its features allow easy operation and get this done fast in the best way possible.

It allows the users to stay productive, organized and focused, which is further simplified by the personal digital assistant, Cortana.

However, the performance of this system is poor for playing high-end games due to the integrated graphics card.

This card is just right enough to play a few casual games on the system at about 25 fps, with or without needing to tone up the graphics settings.

Having said that, users can perform all types of moderate works not including gaming or game development. The system will perform well whether it is used for programming, web development, photo or video editing, software development, and more.

RAM & Storage

The 8 GB memory of the system ensures better and smoother multitasking. It comes on a single DIMM but can be expanded up to 16 GB as and when required.

One of the most significant highlights of this machine is the 1 TB hard drive. It is relatively fast in performance, operating at a speed of 5400 rpm, and offers a lot of space to store most of the program files, software, photos, videos and much more.

Ports & Connectivity

The connectivity options of this system are varied and many. It includes a USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, one HDMI port, an SD card slot, and a headset jack.

There is also an Ethernet port. Add to that, this laptop supports Bluetooth 4.0 and wi-fi of 802.11.ac standard.

Battery Life

The powerful lithium-polymer battery of this laptop adds to the reliability and allows the users to stay productive all day.

The system will work efficiently on a single charge for up to 7 hours and 15 minutes before needing a recharge.

However, depending on the usage, the battery life may vary and last for a couple of hours less. In fact, the battery lasted for 4 hours and 56 minutes when put to specific battery rundown test.

This is quite good given that it comes with a full HD display and even beats a few other competitive models by a significant margin.

Additional Features

The laptop comes with an additional re-writable DVD drive, which may be very useful at times for the college students.

Though everybody does not need it in 2021, it allows watching movies or creating individual media presentations.

It also includes a 720p webcam, which is however not exceptional in performance. It can take decent photos with less details.

It is just good for making occasional video calls or Skype but may not support business webcasts or taking online classes by the students.

The audio system of this laptop comes with DTS Studio Sound technology. However, it will be unwise to expect a hi-fi audio output at this price range from it.

It is just good enough for listening to music or streaming videos. The bass is weak. However, you can make some adjustments to the audio with the DTS Audio Control Panel app included in it by using the preset equalizers and sliders.

It will boost the sound clarity and enhance the volume but not the bass.

Apart from a Windows 10 Home operating system with a 64-bit architecture, this machine also comes with a few useful and not-so-useful software and apps in it.

Especially for the home users and the college students.

It includes CyberLink Power Media Player, PowerDirector, HP Games Powered by WildTangent, McAfee LiveSafe to try for 30 days, Netflix, TripAdvisor, Snapfish, 25 GB cloud storage free for 1 year in the form of Dropbox, HP Support Assistant, and HP ePrint.

The system comes with a limited warranty for technical support, service, and manufacturing defects for 1 year.

Some other users were very specific about this system and their observations.

They said, the design of the system is a stand out and it is not a fingerprint magnet.

Apart from the small up/down arrow keys, the chiclet keyboard is easy to navigate and quite functional. Inclusion of an optical drive, easily accessible USB ports, easy to lift cover, and the screen are all good features of it.

Few users possessed mixed feelings about this laptop however. They said that the sound quality needs some serious improvements.

The trackpad is shifted a bit on the left causing some inconvenience while typing as well. Check out HP Notebook 15-ay011nr Manual.

Several other users apart from college students, especially those who used it for business purposes, suggested that this laptop is great, and not just good, for basic computing tasks, at an affordable price.

It supports web browsing, running web apps, watching Netflix, and supports running several other computer programs very smoothly without any issues.

The bloatware can be uninstalled very quickly. Also, it does not take a long time to boot up and does not crash frequently.

Other Expert Views

Experts at Digital Mag+ consider this to be a good laptop that comes with a full HD display and an affordable price tag. Though it cannot run demanding games, it is a modest choice for any college student or home users who are on a budget.

It is one of the best laptops for doing casual work or for college students for their studies, project work and completing their assignments at home, said The Verge. But users who want to do hardcore work must look elsewhere, they opined.

This is a good laptop to use at home or at school. It is solid in build and performance but the keyboard needs backlights, feels Laptop Mag. The design is attractive, battery life is quite good but it still needs improving some areas.
