The LG Gram 17Z90N laptop is surely the answer to a large yet lightweight laptop with notable aspects. It includes a long battery life, a solid keyboard, and a large enough trackpad, but is quite expensive.

LG Gram 17Z90N Laptop Price

LG Gram 17Z90N Laptop

You will not only love the look of the LG Gram 17Z90N laptop but will also love its overall integrity when it comes to performance and functionality.

The feel, the power of this laptop, and its specs, all adds to its value.

Yes, it does fall into the ‘high price’ bracket, but then, when you get the benefits of a faster boot up, a long battery life, a large screen, and be the owner of the ‘world’s lightest 17-inch laptop,’ you will feel that you have got everything that you paid for.

Apart from its stylish looks, you will get to use a solid backlit keyboard which does not go dark even if you do not use it for a long time and have to turn the lights on again and again.

The screen with thin bezel offers a large viewing area, the processor is great and fast enough, the storage is more than enough, and the connectivity options are adequate.

All these features ensure that you get a performance at a high level and get your jobs done most reliably, quickly, and consistently.

Buy for: Fingerprint reader, full-size backlit keyboard, large responsive trackpad, lightweight, extensive connectivity.

Beware of: Integrated graphics chip, large size, slow charging, wi-fi reconnecting issue.

Best uses for: Accounting students, small business, veterinary-students, arcgis cartographic software, robotics engineering and other purposes.

Design and Build

The design of the backlit keyboard is quite impressive. This allows you to type easily, more accurately and quickly even in low or poorly lit environments.

To turn the backlights on or off, you can however use the F8 function key.

It is full-size with large and well-spaced keys that have a good tactile feedback and travel distance.

The best part is that this keyboard comes with a separate 10-key, four column number keypad that will allow faster data entry onto the spreadsheets.

The buttonless trackpad is fairly large and wide, though located a bit on the left side, and responds to the touches and swipes, glides, and taps of your fingers most easily, quickly and efficiently.

The 17-inch screen of the machine delivers images at high resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels.

This ensures that the images on this WQXGA or Wide Quad Extended Graphics Array non-touch display are clearer, sharper, and have more vivid colors. The ultra-narrow bezel all around the screen offers a larger screen real estate.

This LCD screen comes with IPS technology which offers a wider viewing angle. This means that the images exhibited at 16:10 aspect ratio will look clear from any side.

The elegant and slim case of the laptop is made from magnesium alloy material though it may feel like plastic when you touch it.

This keeps the weight lower than 3 pounds. The smooth, matte finish of the silver-gray case is not a fingerprint magnet at all.

There are no sharp edges on the base or on the lid, which you can open with one hand up to 140 degrees. However, it may wobble at time when you exert too much pressure.

There is nothing to be concerned about the durability of the machine due to its strong build.

It is not only constructed most precisely but to make sure that it is really strong, it is passed through seven military-grade durability tests to obtain the MIL-STD-810G certification.

It validates its endurance level to shocks, vibrations, dust, pressure, salt fog, high and low temperature.

You can expect quite a high level of performance from the 10th generation Intel Core i7 processor that the laptop comes with.

This processor however is a bit slow due to its 10 nm lithography instead of 14 nm which limits its performing speed within 1.30 GHz and 3.90 GHz with Turbo Boost technology.

The Intel Iris Plus, though integrated, does not fail to produce even 4K content. It can apply video filters quickly and most efficiently at the highest level.

This makes this graphics chip efficient enough to support high resolution photo editing jobs and even some 1080p gaming.

It is all due to its base and optimal dynamic frequency of 300 MHz and 1.10 GHz respectively and support of different technologies such as OpenGL 4.5, DirectX 12, and Intel Quick Sync Video.

The Windows 10 Home operating system is built on a 64-bit architecture and comes with different useful features that will make your work easier.

It comes with new features such as the redesigned Start Menu, Microsoft Edge web browser, and a personal assistant Cortana to take on voice commands.

The redesigned Start Menu will allow you to navigate easily and to see all your apps and docs open.

The Microsoft Edge web browser will allow you to write, mark up and even type notes directly on the webpages while reading them.

You can even share it with others and save it to access them offline.

Using the Reading View Mode, you can see only the part that you want to read so that it does not cause any distraction.

RAM & Storage

The onboard 16 GB RAM of this machine comes with a bandwidth of 3200 MHz which will allow you to multitask with a lot of apps, programs, and browser tabs open at the same time.

If you feel that you need some more RAM, you can upgrade it.

This device will support a maximum RAM of 24 GB since it comes with two RAM slots, of which only one has the 16 GB stick installed.

This first slot is soldered onto the motherboard allowing you to add another 8 GB only on the second slot.

The M.2 NMVe SSD of this laptop amounts to 1 TB and comes in two slots of 512 GB each.

This is very fast in performance to boot up the system fast and also offer a huge storage space.

This type of SSD differs from the traditional SATA SSD in speed because it draws on the PCIe interface of the motherboard.

This offers five to six times faster data transfer speed.

Ports & Connectivity

The most unique inclusion of ports in this system, which lacks in most of the laptops today, is the Thunderbolt 3.

This supports charging and smooth video output at the same time and data transfer at a lightning-fast speed of up to 40 Gbps.

As for the display, you can enjoy even a 5K video smoothly.

Apart from that, on the right side of the chassis there are two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A ports, an audio combo jack, and a cable lock slot.

On the left side you will get another USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A port, an HDMI port, and, of course, the Thunderbolt 3 port mentioned above, apart from the power slot.

There is also a Micro SD media card reader slot on the right-hand side of the chassis that has a data transfer speed ranging from 80.5 MB/s to 88.9 MB/s.

As for the internet connectivity options, the system offers and supports Bluetooth 5.0 technology and Intel wi-fi AX201 WLAN standard.

It is 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and 802.11ax standard compatible to offer a stable and strong internet connection.

Battery Life

This specific LG Gram comes with a high power and most efficient lithium-ion battery that has an 80-watt-hour capacity.

This battery can provide enough power to run the system for up to 17 hours, as claimed by the manufacturer.

However, the battery life may vary depending on your type of usage, power settings, screen brightness, and other conditions.

Additional Features

The fingerprint scanner incorporated into the system design provides the utmost security, at your fingertips.

It is integrated to the power button and when you touch it, it will reawaken the device from sleep mode allowing faster boot up and instant log in.

Whether you use your headphones or not when you listen to music, the DTS X Ultra technology used in the audio system of this laptop will offer you an immersive sound experience which will feel more cinematic with its 3D audio rendering ability.

There is a webcam integrated in the system that comes with HD support. It can take pictures at 0.9 megapixels and produce images with a maximum resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

Though the images look a bit washed out and lack in color accuracy, it will surely help while you make a video call.

The manufacturer offers a warranty, though in the US only, for a period of two years, which, however, can be extended up to five years at an additional cost.

What Do Users Think about LG Gram 17Z90N?

This 17-inch laptop is perhaps the lightest one in the market, said a few users.

They added that, in spite of being light in weight, surprisingly, the device comes with a large screen and a long battery life, both of which, as all know, adds to the weight.

It is good that the manufacturer has focused on incorporating an SSD storage, which by itself offers a huge space to store their files, to keep the weight low, they added.

It is pretty fast to boot up and perform, which is what a few users wanted from a machine like this. Check out LG Gram 17Z90N Manual.

It allows them to perform almost all types of computing jobs on it, including preparing their accounts, tax and insurance papers.

It is easy to set up and use and allows running most of the apps and software programs, though the reason to include an integrated graphics card instead of a dedicated one is hard to find, they said.

A few users however, experienced some issues with the wi-fi connectivity of the laptop. It seems to drop periodically, and especially it seems to fail to reconnect from standby mode.

This does not happen in only one band but both of the 2.4 and 5 GHz connections to the router.

Though this is not a deal breaker, it is certainly not expected from a laptop that costs so much and comes with such high-end specs and features, they felt.

In spite of being ultraportable, a few users said that the design could surely have been much better.

They pointed out that when they use the Ethernet port, it practically runs off a USB plug.

They said that it would have been better if it was an integrated item. They also pointed out the good and bad of the keyboard design.

It needs a better layout but the fingerprint scanner is a good inclusion, they said.

The system offers a lot of options for external enhancements, which most of the users liked, though in some situations it results in a weaker performance of the system overall.

Few specific issues that they encountered included delay in the mouse while adding USB hubs or connecting a 4K display through the HDMI port, or even via a USB hub, and slow charging.

A few users said that the audio output needs some improvements just like the video output.

The speakers at the front are more preferred, they added. However, they are extremely happy with their purchase and are getting good value in return for their investment overall.

There is no annoying noise from the fan, the color and resolution are quite consistent, and the design of it is just as good as its build quality.

Other users found a few specific attributes in this laptop to be simply amazing such as a 10-key numeric keypad, an exceptional battery life, and a huge SSD storage.

The device does not disappoint them at all in any aspect. It is just ideal for all computing jobs and a big deal.

Other Expert Views

This is an expensive laptop and yet is not perfect, feels NotebookCheck. There are lots of areas which need significant improvement, one of which is the audio quality. However, compensations come in the form of a large screen, extreme portability, and long battery life.

The Verge feels that this large and lightest laptop is good in most of the aspects but its middling performance is something that is not expected from it with such specs and at this price point. However, the storage is huge and the port selection is good.

This laptop is not for all, said CNET. It is designed especially for those who need a large screen, light weight, and a lot of storage but do not want to tax the integrated graphics chip, and, of course, are not affected by the cost of this machine.
