Due to its overall performance, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 is suitable for people using it for day-to-day tasks and some complex tasks like music production. Though it is nothing exceptional compared to the previous model, it will meet the expectations of people wanting to replace their old and failing laptop on a budget.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 & Variants Price

Microsoft Surface Laptop 2

Overall, the performance as well as the design of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 makes it one of the most reliable laptops, even at par with, if not better than, MacBook Pro.

It will work well both indoors and outdoors, but remember that the battery life of this laptop is just average.

Therefore, remember to carry the power cable with you outdoors because you will not find a replacement when you need it as all Surface products have different voltages and run off of different connectors.

It will boot up fast. The system is also reliable due to its security features. It will recognize your face as soon as you open the system.

The specs of this durable device will allow using it for working on Microsoft Office, simple web browsing, and other things at home, office or school, and even some professional jobs such as music production.

The touchscreen display of this computer is also quite reliable and responsive to touch and will allow you to draw, sketch, and write directly on it using the Surface Pen, or even without it, while creating a content or during lectures.

This system will offer you both, style as well as speed in performance. As for the security, the TPM 2.0 chip and Windows Hello face sign-in will both provide adequate of it and that too of an enterprise grade.

You will be pleased with this laptop considering its price-performance ratio. It is light in weight and extremely portable.

It is super quiet in operation making this premium laptop more reliable, though you will miss some of the ports such as the USB Type C and HDMI port.

The mini display port may cause inconvenience at times, but the system is great, otherwise. Check out best laptop brands.

The screen is sharp and the resolution is great, the keyboard is comfortable to type on and the trackpad is large and responsive.

Adding to the reliability and ease in use, you can use several accessories such as the Surface Arc mouse that is slim and specially designed to fit into your hand and connects through Bluetooth.

You can also use the Surface Dock for additional connectivity options just as the Microsoft wireless display adapter.

Then there is a Surface pen that will add to the convenience when you write and draw on the screen making it more natural and precise.

The precision ink and rubber eraser on its different ends will add to your convenience.

Design and Build

The design of this laptop is quite appealing, though a lot of things are very much the same as the last year’s model.

The metallic exterior of the device gives it a distinct and smooth finish adding on to its premium look and feel.

The keyboard of this machine is pretty small in size but good to type on. The keys come with backlights and spaced perfectly to allow easy and faster typing due to the decent key travel.

The design includes an ambient light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the backlights, which you can also do manually from the keyboard itself.

The trackpad is quite large and sensitive to touch. It will respond quickly when you tap, click or scroll.

The Alcantara fabric around the touchpad and keyboard of this laptop also adds to the beauty as well as the typing comfort as it is easier on the wrists.

You will like to rest your palms on it although it may affect the texture of it after some time.

The 13.5-inch PixelSense screen displays vibrant images with bold colors and finer details.

This touchscreen is more responsive and interactive which will exhibit razor sharp images with high resolution of 2256 x 1504 pixels or 201 PPI.

The images are delivered in 3:2 aspect ratio in 3.4 million pixels. Check out Microsoft Surface Book 3 Laptop Review.

This 10-point multi-touch screen is Surface Pen enabled and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

It will add to your convenience with its fast support and ensure much easier navigation when you work on your project or while sharing photos with your friends.

Most importantly, this system is very light and easy to carry around without putting in much of an effort due to its strategic build using aluminum material and careful engineering to ensure all the hardware components fit well inside its small form factor.

The small size and thin design will allow you to slip this machine in a bag easily. The elegant look will also complement your style even if you carry it in your hand.

The processor of this laptop belongs to the 8th generation and i5 family of Intel.

The four cores of this CPU have a high base clock speed of 1.60 GHz which can be further boosted more than double of it up to 3.40 GHz to handle more complicated processing at faster rate.

It is powerful enough to support the functioning of the integrated graphics chip as well.

However, the Intel HD graphics card, being integrated, does not have the ability to handle high end games though it is powerful enough to handle most of the complicated computing tasks.

This is because most of the integrated graphics cards have a high performing ability due to its design, which is much improved than those available in the past.

With adequate support of different technologies of Intel, these graphics cards can produce images at higher resolution and at a much faster speed.

The Windows 10 Home operating system preinstalled in this device comes with one month’s free trial of Microsoft Office 365 which adds to its usefulness and allows you to create your best work.

Add to that, the inherent features of the operating system, which helps in both the operation of the system as well as ensuring security of your computer, will enable you to do more without much effort and utmost ease.

The security features built in it such as antivirus, firewall, and more will ensure safety while using the internet, the Windows Hello feature will ensure secure, faster, and password-free login, and Focus assist will block unwanted notifications and alerts as well as sounds that may distract you from doing your work.

In short, the operating system will help you to organize your work and timeline while allowing you to work on several apps, documents and websites.

You can search, edit and share most easily and even control audio settings or make screen recordings most efficiently, all of which add to your overall performance as well as that of the computer itself.

Your life will be made much easier by Cortana, your intelligent personal assistant, though you may have to repeat a few commands at times.

RAM & Storage

The 8 GB of DDR DRAM that this model comes with may be a bit lacking in its ability as compared to the common types of memory available in modern laptops, but it is good enough to work on a couple of browser tabs and apps at the same time.

The 128 GB SSD storage, though half of what you will find in most of the laptops today, is also adequate to ensure faster boot up and quicker access of the files and folders stored in it.

Ports & Connectivity

Though there is nothing much to complain about this laptop, the limited number of ports can really be one thing that you will regret about.

There is no USB Type C, Thunderbolt 3, and even not an HDMI port included in the system design.

All you will get is only a USB 3.0 Type A port and a Mini DisplayPort to connect to an external display through a cable.

This means that if you want to add a larger external display to your device, you will need to carry with you a display port adapter as well as a USB hub everywhere.

Or else, you can also spend a couple of hundred dollars on a Surface Dock.

There are also a few other possibilities depending on the type of monitor you wish to connect to it.

If it comes with Miracast capabilities you can connect it wirelessly via Windows Connect, just as you may do while using the wireless display adapter.

However, to connect to the internet, you can use the 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, 802.11abg, 802.11a/b/g/n, and 802.11a standard of wireless communication.

Alternately, if you want to connect it using an Ethernet cable, you can use the same Microsoft Surface Dock that you use to connect an external monitor.

The device also supports Bluetooth wireless 4.1 technology.

Battery Life

No matter what you do and how much you adjust the screen settings, you will not be able to get more than 6 to 7 hours of battery power on a single charge, that too for simple web browsing and occasional watching of videos on YouTube.

This is irrespective of the battery life of 14.5 hours as advertised by the manufacturer.

The good thing is that the charging cable of this laptop is small and compact and therefore should not be much of a problem to carry it along with you when you are on the go.

It will charge up the Lithium polymer battery of the laptop really fast and not keep you waiting.

Additional Features

The audio system of this laptop is quite pretty in performance.

The invisible Omni sonic speakers integrated in the device will produce good enough sound though it is discreetly hidden below the keyboard.

The omnidirectional sound is more vibrant, loud in volume and has decent enough bass, thanks to the Dolby Audio technology support.

There is a front facing 720p HD camera integrated at the top bezel of the screen which supports Windows Hello face authentication.

It takes good enough pictures while you make a video or attend a video conference or online classes.

It also comes with stereo microphones to capture the sound clearly and facilitate in making the video calls.

The device comes with a one-year limited warranty for its parts but the exclusions and inclusions of the standard warranty may differ depending on the country in which you have bought the device.

What Do Users Think about Microsoft Surface Laptop 2?

This laptop is a great one to upgrade an old laptop, said a few users who have done it.

Considering the specs sheet of this device, they believe that it is one of the best laptops available one the market today, on budget.

Though it is pretty much similar to the MacBook Pro lineups in terms of specs, but, beyond that this machine happens to be a good choice as far as performance and price ratio is concerned, they suggested.

This laptop has a beautiful touchscreen display, said some users, that make its standout from the other devices within its category.

It is not only this touch feature that makes it different from the other Windows laptops and a MacBook Pro and easier to operate without using the touchpad only.

The screen also comes with decent brightness which allows using it outdoors. However, they warned not to work on it in direct sunlight to get the best results.

The performance of this system is amazing, said a lot of users, and it will get most of the jobs done in much shorter time.

It has the power and specs to run almost all programs and software including those required for video editing, apart from browsing the web.

The 8 GB of RAM is quite enough to perform several tasks at the same time without any delay. Check out Surface Laptop 2 manual.

The device can handle almost anything that is thrown at it most efficiently, though it will not support hardcore gaming, they said.

The design of this laptop seemed quite appealing to some users. However, they felt that the battery life is pretty decent but nothing near to what the manufacturer claims.

It is the touchscreen display and the high-end processor that consumes most of the battery power, which typically does not meet with their expectations.

The absence of Thunderbolt 3 and USB Type C ports in this laptop seem to disappoint most of the users, no matter how good the other features are.

However, this is not a deal breaker because, according to them, it is a good laptop to complete all their daily tasks efficiently and in quick time.

The voice assistant makes things easier but they feel that it lacks in its response time since most of their orders need to be repeated.

Another significant issue that some other users pointed out is that the system comes with Windows 10 Home operating system preinstalled in it and not the Pro version which would have made it even better and more capable for business computing due to the additional features that the Pro version comes with.

However, the Home version, they said, is good enough for those who do not need to use all those features that Windows 10 pro offers.

Lot of users also said that the battery life is poor and the system is slow to play movies in any player or app and that too with a lot of hiccups, in spite of the inserted chip and RAM.

Nothing is user fixable or upgradable, not even the dying battery because everything is glued, spot welded or soldered on the motherboard and cannot be opened without destroying it.

This is not a very eco-friendly laptop, they claimed, and, if anything happens beyond the one-year warranty, there is no way to deal with it but to buy a new one.

Other Expert Views

Whether it is for use at home, office, or school, IT Pro feels that this is a good enough laptop to go for considering its overall performance and price point. It is an awesome tool but for a subpar battery life.

TechRadar however have been very specific and pointed out the pros and cons of the laptop. They said it is good in aesthetics, powerful with perfect graphics, light in weight with a good touchscreen and keyboard, but with less ports.

According to Engadget, the display and compact nature of this laptop is good. It boots up almost instantly and is fast in performance. The face login and Cortana are cool and fun to get things done though, at times, both seem to be less responsive.
