HP ProDesk 600 G3 is a solid choice for budget-conscious business users and students who need a reliable desktop for everyday productivity tasks and light graphics work. Its compact size, decent performance, and affordable price make it appealing. However, the lack of an SSD, older processor, and limited GPU options mean it's not ideal for demanding workloads.

Design & Build

Design & Build image of Design & Build

HP ProDesk 600 G3 features a practical micro tower design that fits well in tight office spaces. The black front panel with textured detailing contrasts nicely with the white surrounding, giving it a professional look. Tool-free access to the interior allows for easy upgrades and maintenance. While not as sleek as some modern desktops, the build quality is solid.

    • Form Factor: Micro tower
    • Dimensions: 6.69 x 12.13 x 10.8 inches
    • Weight: 12.57 lbs (5.7 kg)

Processor image of Processor

It comes with a 7th gen Intel Core i5-7500 processor. While not the latest, this quad-core CPU provides sufficient performance for common office tasks like word processing, spreadsheets, web browsing and video conferencing. The 3.4-3.8 GHz speeds enable smooth multitasking. However, it may struggle with very CPU-intensive tasks compared to newer processors.

    • Processor Model: Intel Core i5-7500
    • Base Clock Speed: 3.4 GHz
    • Turbo Boost: Up to 3.8 GHz
    • Processing Units: 4 cores / 4 threads

Graphics image of Graphics

This desktop computer relies on integrated Intel HD 630 graphics by default, suitable for everyday computing and video playback. Optional entry-level dedicated GPUs like the NVIDIA GT 730 provide a boost for light graphics work and casual gaming. However, the 75W PCIe slot limits upgrade options. Multiple monitor support is a plus for productivity.

    • GPU Model: Integrated Intel HD 630 Graphics (dedicated GPU optional)
    • Performance Level: Entry-level
    • Suitable Uses: Office work, light photo/video editing, casual gaming

Storage image of Storage

The reviewed configuration includes a 1TB hard disk drive. While ample in capacity, the lack of an SSD impacts overall system responsiveness and boot times. However, the desktop does allow easy storage upgrades, with open drive bays and an M.2 slot to add an SSD if desired. This flexibility is appreciated.

    • Storage Type: HDD
    • Capacity: 1 TB
    • Expandability: 2 open SATA bays, 1 M.2 slot for SSD

Memory image of Memory

The ProDesk 600 G3 comes with 8GB of DDR4 RAM, enough for smooth performance in common business and multitasking scenarios. While not a huge amount by today's standards, 8GB is sufficient for most users outside of heavy workloads. The desktop also allows easy RAM upgrades, with 3 open DIMM slots to boost memory up to 64GB total if needed.

    • RAM Size: 8 GB
    • Type: DDR4
    • Upgrade Options: 3 open DIMM slots, 64GB max

Network image of Network

For networking, the HP ProDesk 600 G3 includes a Gigabit Ethernet port for reliable wired connections. However, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are not standard, only available as optional add-ons. This could be inconvenient for offices that rely on wireless networks and peripherals. The lack of Wi-Fi also limits the desktop's portability for remote work.

    • Ethernet: Gigabit Ethernet port
    • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Optional, not standard

Ports image of Ports

HP ProDesk 600 G3 offers a good selection of ports for connecting peripherals. The front USB-C port is especially handy for newer devices. Multiple USB-A ports, including some with fast charging, are convenient. Dual DisplayPort outputs enable multi-monitor setups. Options for adding legacy ports provide flexibility for various business needs.

    • USB Ports: 4 USB 3.1, 4 USB 2.0, 1 USB Type-C
    • Video Outputs: 2 DisplayPorts (VGA, HDMI, USB-C Alt Mode optional)
    • Audio Jacks: Headphone/microphone combo jack
    • Other Ports: Ethernet, SD card reader, optional legacy ports

Additional Features

The USB fast charging port is convenient for quickly topping up mobile devices. HP includes a suite of security and management software to help IT departments. However, the system also comes with some bloatware that many users will want to uninstall. A basic 2W speaker is integrated.

    • Preinstalled Software: Windows 10 Home, HP business software
    • Security Tools: HP Client Security, HP Drive Lock
    • Warranty and Support: 1 year limited hardware warranty

To gauge the performance potential of this desktop, we deployed it in various business environments, where it delivered decent performance according to their assessment.

After the RAM upgrade, we also tested photo editing on this desktop without encountering significant issues. However, prolonged usage led to increased noise and internal temperature.

Attempts to edit low-resolution videos revealed limitations due to the lack of a dedicated GPU, making HD video editing unfeasible. It also proved proficient for coding and programming tasks, with improved speed and performance observed after increasing the RAM capacity. During regular multitasking with over 8 Chrome tabs open, the desktop's performance remained smooth and uninterrupted.

Overall, HP ProDesk 600 G3 Business Desktop offers a balance of performance and affordability for office work and light graphics tasks. While it may not have the latest components, its compact design and upgrade options make it a practical choice for various users. Consider upgrading RAM for improved performance and be aware of optional features like WIFI and Bluetooth.
