Lenovo Legion Y740 Gaming Laptop Review
Buy For: Top Notch graphics│Thunderbolt support
Beware Of: Outdated CPU│Average Build
Verdict
When you aren’t tight on the budget and need superior performance from your gaming laptop, the Lenovo Legion Y740 is sure to take a high spot on the list. It has got everything that a professional gamer needs, even the multi-monitor support and isn’t too heavy (at about 3 Kgs).
This includes both processing and graphics power. However, it may not be as good as some of the newer laptops launched recently. Also, the price in today’s date isn’t very competitive.
Design and Build
Nobody likes a dull gaming laptop- and this is what Lenovo must have kept in mind while making this device.
The case has been built from Aluminum, and you get an RGB backlit keyboard.
There are RGB lights on the Legion logo at the top of the lid, while some lights are visible through the vents too.
All of it is controlled by the Corsair iCUE software that allows plenty of lighting effects and customizations.
There are speakers near the 2 corners at the front and a bass subwoofer at the back.
As you open the lid, you see a cooling system that does well at its job. Check out best laptop brands.
There are multiple openings below through which air enters and is removed from the laptop through the vents on the side.
The viewing angles are good, and there aren’t very thick bezels which gives you a greater area to look at on the 17.3 inches screen.
There are thinner bezels on some other gaming laptops though. The keyboard and trackpad are good enough, and we noticed a number pad too.
The touchpad is a precise one but could have been bigger. But there are keys acting as mouse buttons.
However, the build isn’t that good, and there could be exterior damage if it isn’t handled properly while traveling.
Performance
The i7-8750H CPU is a great CPU with 6 cores and 12 threads and a speed of 2.2 GHz.
It may not be as fast as the newer 10th gen CPUs, but is a tough competitor to a lot of popular laptops.
The 8 GB of VRAM provided by the RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU can handle even the demanding titles easily.
The ray-tracing looks better than conventional graphics, but the display quality itself is as good as it gets with a 1080p panel.
There isn’t a better display option and sadly the color output isn’t that good.
At 300 nits of maximum brightness and anti-glare qualities, the screen can be used under light.
Thus, for purely editing purposes, there are better options than this one I’m afraid.
Now for gaming specifically, it produces more than average frame rates in the popular games like GTA 5, Battlefield V, etc, and performs significantly better than most of its competition.
The 144 Hz refresh rate is sufficient for any game you play. You may optimize performance and battery life by using the Vantage software present already.
It gives you three modes in which you can limit the CPU and GPU performance as per your preference.
There is Windows 10 Home OS pre-installed in it.
Storage and RAM
The storage present is 512 GB in the SSD. Now it is quite fast, but not amazingly fast and you cannot add another SSD.
You may add a hard drive as a 2.5” bay is left spare for the purpose.
There is 16 GB of dual-channel memory to be used for the CPU, which can be expanded.
Ports and Connectivity
The Legion Y740 has got many ports, and a Thunderbolt 3 is one of them.
At the sides, you have a USB 3.1 Type-C port (with Thunderbolt support), a USB 3.1 Gen2 port, and a headphone and mic combo jack.
Then at the back, there are two USB 3.1 gen 1 ports and an Ethernet port. A mini display port and an HDMI port are present for visual connections.
The device supports Bluetooth 4.1 and 802.11 ac WIFI.
Battery Life
The laptop uses a 75Wh battery to power itself. Given the high capacity GPU, it is clear that on extensive usage it will not last long.
Simple tasks like web browsing should give you about 4-5 hours of battery life, and that too with some alterations to the BIOS settings.
But when both the processor and video card are being used the backup reduces to 2 hours at most.
It gets charged up pretty quickly, within two hours on average.
Additional Features
The Dolby Atmos speakers are satisfying and the sound is quite clear even on the higher volumes.
One can easily play games in VR using a headset and the laptop is quite good at it.
The webcam is an average 720p one, but you do get to protect your privacy by using the privacy shutter.
There is G-Sync support that makes playing games smoother on the display by matching the refresh rate of the screen with the GPU.
You get the standard warranty from Lenovo as well.

What Do Users Think about Legion Y740?
The users have bought different variants of the device and are satisfied with the purchase.
They needed a powerful laptop, and this is the one that fulfilled their demands.
It did create noises under workload, and battery backup was justifiably on the lower side.
Some have encountered heating issues, to the extent that it could not be used on one’s lap.
Yet others have found the heating to be under usual limits. Check out Legion Y740 Manual.
Other Expert Views
The experts of CNET believe that the users would be right to choose the Lenovo Legion Y740 since it comes slightly cheaper, and yet provides better performance than other RTX 2080 options available.
The experts of Laptop Mag think that it is a power performer, and it is likely to outrun most other gaming laptops. The keyboard and speakers are worth the investment. However, they criticize the build since it is an expensive device, and the battery life could have been better.
Now those at Digital Trends did not like the keyboard much but are fond of the design except the weight. They think that it is rightly priced when considered the potential it brings. At the time they reviewed it, it was cheaper than the Asus Gephyrus S GX 701 with similar specs, and this is why they were more inclined towards it.
